How to Plan Perfect Packaging ?

 Planning a Perfect Packaging

According to the Sealed Air 2014 - Packaging for e-commerce survey conducted in the United States, 66% of consumers believe that packaging says how much the trader takes care of them and their order. At a time of continued growth in e-commerce, this aspect is vital for businesses. If the packaging of a parcel seems to be an innocuous gesture, there are however some essential bases to respect. Follow our perfect parcel guide, step by step.

Ask yourself the right questions

Packing your merchandise seems very simple, but the reality is quite different. A well packaged package asks you to ask yourself some important questions before sending your goods. Here is a non-exhaustive list to help you in this task ...

What : what do you put in your boxes?
Where : Where do you ship your products?
When : When do you need the products?
How : how do you intend to send it? By carrier, by Post?
How many: How many products do you need to put in the package?

This question is far from innocuous because the breaks of load are more violent , the parcel will be more roughed up with Post than with professionals of the courier.

1st Step: The Choice of Packaging

This first step partly answers the question: "What do you put in your boxes? " The wrong choice of packaging can have adverse consequences on the condition of your package at the time of receipt: a crate depressed, damaged, may disappoint the consumer.

And ask you what is the product to ship. This question determines the nature of the packaging you will use. Indeed, a fragile product requires a resistant packaging, while a product of unbreakable nature (a sweater, for example) may very well be sent in a plastic bag.

There are several strengths , which are determined by the weight and type of the product: single, double or triple flute. Always keep in mind that between your company and their recipient packages will be handled repeatedly, stacked, loaded and unloaded with more or less precaution !

A well packaged and protected package requires a body size adapted to the product . If the cardboard is too big, you risk either to abuse the means of rigging (see step n ° 2) or to see your product bumping against the walls and arrive damaged.

Step 2: Stall the Product

You have chosen a packaging with the right dimensions, resistant enough to protect the product, but this is not necessarily enough to stabilize it in the box . For this, there are different types of wedges : kraft paper, bubble wrap, air cushions, foam, etc.

When you buy 20 tons of crimp per year, that means you ship those 20 tons by mail, package after package ... We now use air cushions, manufactured on demand by a machine. We gain space and time in handling, and save on shipping costs.

Once again, ask yourself the nature of the product to ship :
If the object is fragile, choose an effective protective packaging such as bubble film. If the object is not fragile, but may be damaged by bumping against the corners of the cardboard, opt for a wedging solution such as kraft paper or air cushion.

Step 3: Set Up The Product

Several scenarios: you can have only one delicate product to pack, or several goods to put in the same package. In the latter case, you can use the objects to wedge them with each other according to their weight or shape: the heavier object must be placed first, at the bottom of the box so as not to crush the others. Then divide the other products around the heavy object and then above.

4th Step: Close the Package

Now that your product is in the right packaging, protected by effective blocking, you can close your package . It sounds obvious, but there are some rules to follow.

With tape : choose a solid, 5 cm wide, so that it prevents the cardboard from opening by itself. You can close your box in several different ways with a roll of tape:

    L : for light products
In U : for heavy products or the transport of light products that will go through several routing steps
By combining L and U : for the transport of heavy products over time
In H : very secure method and suitable for all products.
With a strapping method : circled, the package is safe and will not open. This method is however suitable for a mode of delivery by carrier and not by mail, because the package could then cling in the conveyors and tear.

Step 5: Ship the Package

The essential is done, the package well packaged, protected and closed. It must now arrive safely in good condition ! To do this, be sure to place your mailing labels as follows:

On the document pocket , the addresses of the recipient and the sender must be clearly visible. Think of the labels " International " or " Fragile ", so that the carrier can take some precautionary measures during the routing.

The package is now ready to ship. Thanks to the good care provided to your packaging boxes, the consumer should live a happy moment of unboxing and recommend without hesitation the company.

The Three Key points to Remember :

  1.     Ask yourself the right preliminary questions before packing a product: what, where, when, how, etc. This will save you time in order preparation.
  2.     Think about the nature of the product to be shipped and opt for suitable packaging and packaging.
  3.     Close your parcel well and put the shipping labels necessary for a serene transport.
